On November 7th, 1934, Rachmaninoff's Rhapsody on a Theme of Paganini was first performed in Baltimore, with Rachmaninoff as piano soloist and Stokowski conducting the Philadelphia Orchestra. The piece is a set of 24 variations on a theme by Niccolò Paganini, and the variation 18 is particularly famous.
